This is my Nana Richards, my mother's grandmother. She was Welsh, and moved to the U.S. as a young woman with my great-grandfather. I based this on an old tinted photo from my mother's stash of keepsakes. I've heard she came to visit when I was a newborn, and insisted on taking me out for an "airing in the pram" in a blinding snowstorm. I was also told that she had a strong personality, and consequently great-granddad spoke little, and drank a lot of gin. Some hat, huh!

Liz - A beautiful painting of a proper lady. Who knows maybe she nipped a little at the gin, since she thought you needed an "airing" in a snowstorm...Gotta love a gin-drinking-great-granddad!
Wow!!! Liz, this is so awesome. I love the sheen on her dress and the kindness and very familiar look to her lovely face.
:0)
Thanks, Angela! Maybe she was nipping a bit of anti-freeze herself that day! : )
Thanks, Sheila. I wanted to bring her to life somehow, I heard so many stories.
Hi Liz,
Thanks for stopping by my blog!
Your work is fantastic! Your Nana's portrait is absolutely stunning!
I agree with all above!!! This IS stunning. She has a slight smile on her face and I bet you added that. It is rare to see those old photos with the people smiling. She would have loved it!!!
Thanks, Manon. I appreciate it!
Cathyann - the photo is 5x7, so not too teeny. And thank you!
Thanks so much Marilyn. Nice to think she would have liked it.
Gorgeous painting, Liz! She was a very beautiful and elegant lady.
Thank you Edward. : )
Beautiful work, Liz...I see a resemblance!
Liz- You know it's good when you don't have to read about it to know what it's about! I think you have really captured her character. This looks like the book cover to her biography ;>)
Thanks so much Dean and Tom!
Liz I have looked at all your work!! They are all stunning and in so many different mediums! Beautiful work and thank you for following!!
She is beautiful! What a lovely painting. That is a great hat!
Thank you Theresa, and welcome!
Thanks, Michelle. i swear the hat was this huge. :-)
Hello Liz,
Thanks for visiting my blog.. and for the kind comments and the "follow". I've enjoyed reading your blog and seeing your beautiful art. I was particularly drawn to this painting. You did a fab job with her skin tones- all of her face is done so well..WOW!. The fabric in her dress fairly shimmers!
Re: the caretaker thing... we get a small taste of that too. My MIL is paralyzed on one side and severely speech impaired from a stroke; frequently incontinent and often confused. But she has a great sense of humor and usually is a sweetheart. We keep her every Friday afternoon through Monday morning. My thoughts and support to you.
You do such lovely work! I'm always glad to "meet" another artist.
