This is one of 6 florals that I have hanging in a group show at the Delaplaine Visual Arts and Education Center through the end of June. I'd never worked on Ampersand's Claybord before. Boy, does is soak up some paint. The brush would be dry before I'd completed a stroke. I put out a FB plea, and Manon told me she usually seals it first. Ah ha. Good to know for future pieces.

This is beautiful. I find that white/cream color flowers are so difficult in that they require so much restraint. The slightest addintion of color can make it start to be too dark. Your work is amazing.
This rose is beautiful It just jumped right out at me. Love the way you softened the background, but kept it filled w/ values.

I am surprised how it came out on the surface you used. I had a piece once and threw it out after about a 10 minute trial. Never thought of coating it. But I think I will stick to what I have.

This rose is amazing. It's so difficult to paint the values in a white subject without making it look muddy. I avoid them for this very reason, but you've pulled it off perfectly:) This is the first time I've visited your blog... I'll be back:)

Gary - I'm with you. I was ready after a few hours to throw myself and or the board right out of the window. Took about 6 layers of paint before I could start to build some glow.

Hi, Kathy - the regular gessoed ampersand is pretty slick. The ampersand claybord is the absorbent surface. They advertise it as suitable for watercolors also, so you may want to give it a whirl.

I just recently tried the claybord too, but with oil and it does soak up the paint, making it terrible to work on! But it was much better after I gessoed it a few times first.
I adore the way the white blossom glows with warmth.
This is stunning, it really glows on the page and is soft and serene. Wow!

Lovely hues showing that a white rose is not white, beautifully observed :-)
So ............... please change the title to 'pale blue, greens, orange and white rose ;-)
By the way ... you may find the Ampersand 'Gessoboard' better, it is not as absorbent but I always use another coat of Liquitex gesso anyway.
Hardboard/masonite is a lot cheaper and just as good after 4 coats of gesso :-)
I especially like the rosebud near the very front!
