White Rose

"Promise"
24"x 24"
acrylic on Claybord

This is one of 6 florals that I have hanging in a group show at the Delaplaine Visual Arts and Education Center through the end of June.  I'd never worked on Ampersand's Claybord before. Boy, does is soak up some paint.  The brush would be dry before I'd completed a stroke.  I put out a FB plea, and Manon told me she usually seals it first.  Ah ha.  Good to know for future pieces.

Many thanks to Don Dunsmore for a lovely reference photo.

Thanks, Galina! White roses always make me feel nostalgic and happy for some reason.

Linda - thanks. You're so right about the green. Can't beat mother nature :-D

Hi, Mi! Thanks for visiting and for your kind words. xo

Thanks, Leslie! I'm glad it looks like a painting. :-D

Well, Rahina, you've just summed up my last several weeks of painting and wrestling with this surface! I was ready to throw myself or the claybord out the window at some points! lol.

Thanks, Ellen!

Merci beaucoup, Martine! J'aime la symbolique des roses blanches et de nouveaux départs. Bon printemps à vous!

Gorgeous rose Liz, it is so full of life. In the larger size it would be stunning and I'd love to see it live. Those blue highlights are beautiful.

Stunning Liz!

This is beautiful. I find that white/cream color flowers are so difficult in that they require so much restraint. The slightest addintion of color can make it start to be too dark. Your work is amazing.

This rose is beautiful It just jumped right out at me. Love the way you softened the background, but kept it filled w/ values.

Hi Liz,
Your rose is stunning and romantic! I am drawn right in to the center with that beautiful creamy vanilla. So lovely...

Mona Diane Conner said...

wonderful budding rose Liz! I agree with Vern, the blue interplay with the cream colors is beautiful, and picked up nicely in the greenery as well.

really nice Liz.
I am surprised how it came out on the surface you used. I had a piece once and threw it out after about a 10 minute trial. Never thought of coating it. But I think I will stick to what I have.

Absolutely beautiful Liz!

This is lovely Liz, have you tried propanels? No sealing necessary, though they are a bit pricey. They are so kind to the paint...

Hi Liz,

Your rose painting is so delicate and wonderful. I have enjoyed catching up with you. Especially your post about you and sailboats. The trip sounds magical.

Ninalee Irani said...

This rose is amazing. It's so difficult to paint the values in a white subject without making it look muddy. I avoid them for this very reason, but you've pulled it off perfectly:) This is the first time I've visited your blog... I'll be back:)

L.Holm said...

Hi, Ann! Thanks. I knew French in college, but rely on google translate (for better or worse!)

Thank you, Irit. I wish I could post more frequently

Thanks Cathyann, Vern and Dana - hugs, guys.

Carolina-Elizabeth - you're so right about whites. transitions often have to come from subtle shifts in hue and temperature rather than value. makes me cross-eyed!

Thanks, Caio! I appreciate it.

Pam - thanks for looking so closely.

Dominique - thanks! glad it triggered another of the senses! very cool.

Thank you, Sandy...my favorite bit, too.

Thanks, Mona! xo

Gary - I'm with you. I was ready after a few hours to throw myself and or the board right out of the window. Took about 6 layers of paint before I could start to build some glow.

Thank you Kay and Ski - appreciate your visit!

L.Holm said...

Thanks Joan and Lee. :-D

Hi, Kathy - the regular gessoed ampersand is pretty slick. The ampersand claybord is the absorbent surface. They advertise it as suitable for watercolors also, so you may want to give it a whirl.

Thanks, Liz!

Hi, Nancy - I haven't tried them, but thanks for your e-mail and the link! xo

Thanks for visiting, Maggie!

Chris - thanks for your good critique. I appreciate it! Thanks, too, for your email...will write soon!

Thanks, Arti - I'm glad the struggle isn't evident! lol..

Thank you Edward and Liana.

Hi, Carolina! my thanks and hugs back.

Thank you, Sam!

Hi, Scott and Dors - thanks for your kind words,.

Thanks, Karine. I appreciate your visit. I'll be by soon!

Thanks for your visit, Ninalee. So true about whites, but I think you do them beautifully!

I love the light on this. Beautifully done.

Michelle said...

Absolutely lovely, Liz!

I just recently tried the claybord too, but with oil and it does soak up the paint, making it terrible to work on! But it was much better after I gessoed it a few times first.

Sherry Pierce Thurner said...

I adore the way the white blossom glows with warmth.

Caroline Peña Bray said...

This is stunning, it really glows on the page and is soft and serene. Wow!

L.Holm said...

Thanks, Jala - will be by soon!

Celeste - gesso or matt medium

Thanks, Kerry, Suzanne and Kim.

thanks for visiting Sunshine and Shadows.

Thanks for the tip, Michelle. part of the appeal was the 'ready to go w/out gesso', but I think it's inevitable! lol.

Thanks so much for your visit, Sherry.

Thanks, Caroline..nice to meet you!

What a gorgeous rose! Great colors on the white rose as well as the background.

NANCY said...

Liz, I am definitely not an art critic, but your work is beautiful! How do you get the lighting just right? The rose is beautiful!

Paul Coventry-Brown said...

Hey Liz

Lovely hues showing that a white rose is not white, beautifully observed :-)
So ............... please change the title to 'pale blue, greens, orange and white rose ;-)
By the way ... you may find the Ampersand 'Gessoboard' better, it is not as absorbent but I always use another coat of Liquitex gesso anyway.
Hardboard/masonite is a lot cheaper and just as good after 4 coats of gesso :-)

Hi Liz, I am not sure I have ever even imagined someone would have 61 comments!! And I know why, this is the most exquisite rose I have ever seen painted. Just stunningly elegant and beautiful.
Hope all is well with you and your mom. I think about you often:)
