Broadway

"Broadway"
22" x 28"
Soft pastel

In 2002-3 I spent an intensive year in the Post Baccalaureate program at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore.  The post bacc candidates had studio space in a converted warehouse on the outskirts of campus.  The lighting was poor, the air circulation nonexistent, and the neighborhood none too safe.  None of that mattered because we were painting, and dogs were welcome!  This is Broadway, whom one of my studio mates, Dana, had rescued from life on the streets.  Broadway was a frequent visitor, and often kept me company into the wee hours.  True to her border collie roots, she would stare at me with intense focus until I put down my brushes to come play.

Oh this piece is so precious, beautifully done. I love the story behind it also. I would printed out and tape it to the back of the picture for the future so it can be with the picture. Your work is so lovely you inspire me.

Dogs say, "anything I stare at long enough I can have." I think it is true for us all.

Give my regards to Broadway....sorry, I couldn't resist! :)
Seriously, this is breathtaking! The lighting on top of his head makes me swoon! If I could only.....

Wow, how beautiful! And what a sweet-looking dog. I love border collies and border collie mixes.

Great painting Liz, she is a beauty and your portrait shows the intensity and loyalty you wrote about. Border Collies need to run and be active...I'm surprised she was so patient.

L.Holm said...

Funny, Fred! You could be right. Thanks for visiting.

LOL! Perfect, Lee! Wish I'd thought of it!

Thanks Jala. She was a sweet dog. My cousins in the UK had a border collie that I adored, too.

Vern - thanks very much. You're absolutely right. She was incredibly patient, and boy could she run.

What a beautiful painting of Broadway! Liz, you have captured her thoughts through her beautiful eyes. Great work!!

It's all been said, beautiful story and lovely painting!

Great composition! I love the opposing diagonal lines and I really like the way the leash looped on the right balances the big black patch on the left of Broadway's body. Wow!

Woman, what you can do with "chalk" is breathtaking! You move from oil to pastel and back again with such mastery.

Broadway's eyes are THE focal point and rightfully so. I've always thought our dog Shad-o has Boarder Collie in him - he has those same expressive and demanding eyes. Wonderful portrait!!!!!

Broadway is WONDERFUL, Liz! Those eyes and that sweet hopeful expression - beautiful job!

Liz, Thank you for leaving such a nice comment on my blog. Your pet paintings are fabulous! If I had a pet...well I do actually, but he is a fast swimming little fish and hard to photograph. You are the first person I have come across that went to MICA. I also attended for a year.

I know I already commented, but I had to come back and look again. I can't believe how GOOD this is. I mean, obviously, you're a fantastic painter, but this one in particular just blow me away!

(Hope you mom is well; we're having quite the 'mom' week too, and looking towards the next level of care... did somehow make it to the hairdressers-- what an adventure!)

Your work is just beautiful, Liz. Your heart and soul show through your work. I especially like Broadway and Angel. My Cooper looks like Broadway's brother.
It must be extremely difficult to care for your mother. I hope you have a lot of help.

You've really nailed the eyes! Can't believe this dog would have to be rescued but sounds like he found a good home.

Really great portrait! I had to laugh out loud with joy at the intense look in her eyes. I don't think any other breed can stare you down quite like a Border Collie and you really captured that! Love the vivid red leash against her silky black fur as well.

L.Holm said...

Thanks, Gwen! So true about the border collie stare.
