In 2002-3 I spent an intensive year in the Post Baccalaureate program at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore. The post bacc candidates had studio space in a converted warehouse on the outskirts of campus. The lighting was poor, the air circulation nonexistent, and the neighborhood none too safe. None of that mattered because we were painting, and dogs were welcome! This is Broadway, whom one of my studio mates, Dana, had rescued from life on the streets. Broadway was a frequent visitor, and often kept me company into the wee hours. True to her border collie roots, she would stare at me with intense focus until I put down my brushes to come play.

Once again you have captured the pose perfectly! Very clever dogs, made me smile:o)
Hi Liz! I really like it how you portray animals in a beautiful and special way! You are gifted!!
:-) Greetings from Germany
Thanks, Sam! They are clever dogs. Mighty hard to resist their commanding stare : )
Mi, hi! Thanks so much for visiting, and for your kind comments. I'll be right over.
Hey, Cathyann- you're up early! Yes, very lucky to have gone to MICA. Great experience.
Thanks for the comments on my blog; I am glad you stopped by, now I am able to see your GREAT work
Thanks so much, Conrad!
Oh he is so sweet..Is he begging take me with you?
Beautiful piece Liz great work!
And how is your momma?
Hi, Irit. Thanks so much. Mom's decided she'd help me this week by shredding the bills I need to pay! Bless her.... : )
Oh this piece is so precious, beautifully done. I love the story behind it also. I would printed out and tape it to the back of the picture for the future so it can be with the picture. Your work is so lovely you inspire me.
Dogs say, "anything I stare at long enough I can have." I think it is true for us all.
Give my regards to Broadway....sorry, I couldn't resist! :)
Seriously, this is breathtaking! The lighting on top of his head makes me swoon! If I could only.....
Wow, how beautiful! And what a sweet-looking dog. I love border collies and border collie mixes.
Great painting Liz, she is a beauty and your portrait shows the intensity and loyalty you wrote about. Border Collies need to run and be active...I'm surprised she was so patient.
Funny, Fred! You could be right. Thanks for visiting.
LOL! Perfect, Lee! Wish I'd thought of it!
Thanks Jala. She was a sweet dog. My cousins in the UK had a border collie that I adored, too.
Vern - thanks very much. You're absolutely right. She was incredibly patient, and boy could she run.
Liz, what great paintings of both Angel and Broadway and enjoyed your story about both as well. Excellent work and beauty.
What a beautiful painting of Broadway! Liz, you have captured her thoughts through her beautiful eyes. Great work!!
It's all been said, beautiful story and lovely painting!
Great composition! I love the opposing diagonal lines and I really like the way the leash looped on the right balances the big black patch on the left of Broadway's body. Wow!
Woman, what you can do with "chalk" is breathtaking! You move from oil to pastel and back again with such mastery.
Broadway's eyes are THE focal point and rightfully so. I've always thought our dog Shad-o has Boarder Collie in him - he has those same expressive and demanding eyes. Wonderful portrait!!!!!
What a great expression!
What a lovely portrait.
Broadway is WONDERFUL, Liz! Those eyes and that sweet hopeful expression - beautiful job!
Liz, Thank you for leaving such a nice comment on my blog. Your pet paintings are fabulous! If I had a pet...well I do actually, but he is a fast swimming little fish and hard to photograph. You are the first person I have come across that went to MICA. I also attended for a year.
I am glad you found me and I found you - love your doggie portraits, in fact all your portraits! And Broadway is so special - those eyes just totally fixed on you.
I want to be the one taking this cutie for a walk! Very well done!
Not only beautifully painted, I also love the way you capture the expression in your paintings, pets and people. Great work.
Incredible painting. You really have a gift. Way to go.
Those eyes melted my heart, who could be so cruel as to toss him out on to the street? Beautiful painting.
I love the story about your Angel. What a beautiful, beautiful painting! Oh! you are talented.

Absolutely beautiful painting, Liz. And a great story. What a soulful look you've captured. You wield a pastel very well.
A super picture, wonderfull textures and colours and the dog itself is smart!
I know I already commented, but I had to come back and look again. I can't believe how GOOD this is. I mean, obviously, you're a fantastic painter, but this one in particular just blow me away!
(Hope you mom is well; we're having quite the 'mom' week too, and looking towards the next level of care... did somehow make it to the hairdressers-- what an adventure!)
I've been seeing a lot of paintings of dogs and cats online but I honestly think these are some of the best. Great pose and technique.
Your work is just beautiful, Liz. Your heart and soul show through your work. I especially like Broadway and Angel. My Cooper looks like Broadway's brother.
It must be extremely difficult to care for your mother. I hope you have a lot of help.
Ann and Akiko - thank you so much!
Angela - thanks for noticing! I really worked at this composition to get it to flow. I appreciate your comments.
Marilyn - thanks! I love pastel. And especially this week since oil painting is beating me silly.

Marco and Kathleen - thank you so much, and thanks for visiting.
Deborah - thanks so much for visiting and looking at my work. Cooper! great name. Not much help with Mom so far, but I'm working on it! : )
She is beautiful! I really like the composition, your choice of colors, and that look in her eyes is awesome. So much life!
Thanks, Sara!
Wow, love all the colors you used to achieve your results. Beautiful!
Rachel - thanks so much, and thanks for visiting!
Broadway is terrific Liz! Boy... are you talented!
Thanks, so much Manon. You, too.... : )
You've really nailed the eyes! Can't believe this dog would have to be rescued but sounds like he found a good home.
All I can say is wow! I thought this was a photograph when I first looked at it. Then you pulled me in with the softness of your pastel work. Bravo!
Thanks so much, Barb!
Jennifer, welcome, and than you.
What a beautiful piece. I love the design and the wonderful use of color!
Really great portrait! I had to laugh out loud with joy at the intense look in her eyes. I don't think any other breed can stare you down quite like a Border Collie and you really captured that! Love the vivid red leash against her silky black fur as well.
Thanks, Gwen! So true about the border collie stare.
Thanks so much, Bill!
Warms my heart. A beautiful painting of a beautiful dog.
Thanks so much, Mary.
Broadway's coat is so shiny and her eyes are so bright! Beautifully done!
Thanks so much, Christine! I appreciate it. Thanks for visiting.
